Originating in Europe, particularly in France and Italy, the Oil and Vinegar set is first seen in the UK towards the end of the 17th Century, and was to become the precursor to cruet sets and the more commonly used condiment set. The original oil and vinegar sets were made up of two glass bottles with silver lids, occasionally fitted to a silver stand, and it is this design which is still popular today, with designs changing as fashions did, from the baroque to the neoclassical.
